The Power of Licorice Tea

A simple cup of tea with incredible health benefits!

Every day at our fingertips we have incredible gifts from nature to draw on. There is innate wisdom and healing potential in nature's garden. With viral and respiratory conditions at an all time high, it is important to know what you can do and use to support yourself. What you put into your body is essential. From the moment you wake up until the time you go to bed, it is imperative to be mindful, conscious and care deeply about what you eat and drink.

Welcome to the diverse power of licorice root!

According to herbal expert James Duke, PhD,  “licorice contains the most antifungal compounds of any herb, more anti-depressant compounds than any other herb, and the most bacteria-killing compounds. On top of this licorice root is powerfully anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, antiviral, antioxidant, expectorant, demulcent, antispasmodic, mildly laxative, immune supporting, adrenal gland supporting, hormone balancing, anti-cancer and liver protecting.” This amazing list just might make licorice one of the most versatile, valuable and underrated herbs in the world!

Licorice (the active compound glycyrrhizin) is also known to help the following conditions:

  • Ulcers, H. pylori and heartburn
  • Helps to soothe and seal the intestinal lining making it a perfect leaky gut intervention
  • All forms of inflammation (arthritis, bursitis, any “itis,” allergies and asthma)
  • Supports the body’s ability to deal with stress making it a great adrenal tonic
  • Helps the body fight infection including herpes, HIV, staph, strep, candida and the common cold
  • It helps improve lung problems including cough, sore throat and bronchitis
  • You can soak your foot in licorice tea for athletes foot
  • Wash your hair with it for dandruff
  • Helps soothe psoriasis and eczema
  • It helps to bring estrogen:progesterone into balance
  • It is used as a liver tonic
  • In 2003 the Lancet reported that the compound in licorice (glycyrrhizin) powerfully inhibited the virus that caused SARS. Need I say more?

As a tea, it is safe to drink 2-3 cups a day. The only caveat is to avoid licorice root if you have hypertension.
