“Nutritional psychiatry focuses on the connection between diet and brain health. It uses food and supplements that prevent and treat mental health disorders. This type of intervention is starting to become more widely accepted as the need for effective mental health treatments become more urgent.”– Karen Jensen, ND

This past year I have been writing a lot about Neuro-Nutrition. Neuro Nutrition or Neuro-Nutrient Therapy, is all about feeding the brain the powerful amino acids, vitamin and mineral co-factors that produce neurotransmitters which control how we feel, think, function, and behave. I focus on using the power of food and natural and safe nutritional supplements to optimize brain function and improve many symptoms and conditions such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, OCD, ADD/ADHD, food cravings, food addictions and eating disorders, including Binge Eating Disorder, Bulimia and Anorexia. This is Nutritional Psychiatry!

This approach has been and continues to be very successful for many of my clients. For teenagers, as well, this approach is very promising as many parents are looking for effective alternatives to medications or help for their struggling teens. The teenage brain is still developing, and hormones are drastically changing. The amount of brain power they need for school, and energy they need for their sports and activities and the resilience they need to handle all the stress and pressure they are faced with is significant. Kids are starving for high quality nutrition, and they need supplements to support their physical, mental and emotional health and energetic output.  If they are not receiving optimum nutrition and supplement intervention, which majority of them are not, it isvery common for teens and frankly kids at any age to develop and experience anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral challenges, and eating disorders.

These mental and mood imbalances are not character flaws. They are rooted in nutritional deficiencies.Studies indicate that lack of dietary nutrients, especially vitamins, minerals and omega 3 fatty acids, contribute to the development of mental health disorders. In Canada, 1.2 million teens are affected by mental illness and 70% ofmental health symptoms start in childhood before kids reach 18. According toThe Lancet, “Nutritional Psychiatry is developing into a real opportunity for clinical intervention for patients, especially those who suffer from depressionand anxiety.”

I have assessed many kids and see widespread deficiencies in protein, essential fats and vegetable fiber. They are fueling on sugar - the dirtiest energy source, and filling their body and brains with processed, packaged and fast food. They are literally starving and malnourished. On top of that they are deficient in zinc, iron, magnesium, B-Vitamins and Omega-3 fatty acids, to name a few, that are essential for body and brain development and function. It is no wonder that so many kids are struggling.

The promising thing is thereis hope. There is so much we can do with the power of food and natural supplements to support ourselves and our kids. There is no need to wait. We can change the health of ourselves and our children with effective and safe nutritional strategies. We must provide the nutritional foundations for better physical, mental and emotional health and I can absolutely help with that! Book a consultation today.
